Anti-terror operation continues in Turkey’s south east

Operations in the region are being supported by artillery fire and helicopter gun ships.


NTV - 31 October 2007 A massive operation by the Turkish armed forces to scour the country’s east and south eastern provinces of the terrorist group the PKK is still under way, with clashes in some 12 areas across at least three provinces.

Turkish forces in the south eastern province of Hakkari are reported to be closing the net on between 100 and 150 members of the PKK in the mountainous Yuksekova region, close to the border with Iraq.

There was also fighting in the provinces of Sirnak and Tunceli.

Four soldiers of the Turkish security forces have lost their lives in operations being carried out since Sunday, while at least 17 members of the PKK have been killed in the recent wave of fighting. Three soldiers were killed in clashes in Sirnak and a sergeant of the paramilitary gendarme lost his life when he set off a land mine planted by the PKK.
